Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Charlotte, NC

Common questions from homeowners in Charlotte and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often should a dryer vent in Charlotte actually get cleared out?

Once a year covers most households here. Push it to every six or eight months if you run four or more loads a week, if pets live inside, or if the dryer sits in a second-floor laundry room with a long run to the roof. Spring matters more in this metro than people expect. Oak, pine and sweetgum pollen coats everything for weeks, and some of it gets pulled through the vent hood. If the dryer has never been serviced and the house was built in the 2005-and-later wave of two-story construction, it is probably overdue.

What are the warning signs of a clogged vent?

The clearest one is laundry that needs two cycles when it used to need one. Also watch for a dryer cabinet that feels hot to the touch, a laundry room that gets humid and musty while the machine runs, and a burnt or scorched smell on towels. Go outside mid-cycle and put your hand near the vent hood. Weak airflow, or a flap that barely lifts, means the line is loaded.

Walk me through the job from the moment you arrive.

We look at the whole path first: the machine, the transition hose behind it, the duct inside the wall or crawlspace, and the exterior hood. The dryer gets pulled out and disconnected. Then we run a rotating brush on flexible rods through the line while a vacuum captures what comes loose, working from whichever end gives better access. After that we reconnect everything, run the dryer, and check airflow at the hood so you can see the difference yourself.

How long will I need to be home for this?

Plan on about an hour for a short run, like the side-wall vent on a 1950s brick ranch in the first ring. Longer runs through a crawlspace, or a second-floor laundry venting up through the roof, usually land closer to ninety minutes or two hours. A nest removal or a collapsed section of duct adds time. We tell you on arrival what we expect, before any work begins.

Why does one house cost more to service than the next?

Duct length and access drive it. A ground-floor laundry on an exterior wall is quick work. A townhome or mid-rise condo laundry closet where the line runs up two floors and out the roof takes more rod, more time, and sometimes roof access. Crawlspace routing adds labor because the duct has to be reached from underneath. If a section is crushed, disconnected, or packed with nesting material, that gets priced separately and only after you approve it. You see a free estimate before we touch anything.

How do I know the fault is the vent and not the dryer itself?

Simple test. Disconnect the duct from the back of the machine and run the dryer on air-fluff for a couple of minutes. Strong air out the back means the machine is fine and the blockage is in the line. Weak air means the problem is inside the dryer, usually a worn blower wheel or a lint-choked internal housing, and you want an appliance tech. We make that call on site and tell you straight if cleaning the vent will not fix what you are seeing.

Is there a real difference between metal duct and the flexible stuff?

Yes, and it shows up fast. Smooth rigid metal lets lint ride straight through. Flexible foil or plastic accordion hose has ridges that catch fiber at every turn, and it sags and kinks behind the machine where nobody looks. In older close-in bungalows we still find white vinyl hose, which should come out regardless of its condition. Rigid pipe with a short metal transition at the machine is what we recommend, and we can swap it while we are there.

You found a bird or rodent nest in my vent. Now what?

This comes up often around here, especially on side-wall hoods with a broken or missing damper flap. We pull the nest material out through the hood, clear the rest of the line, and vacuum the debris. Then the hood gets replaced with one that has a working damper or a guard, because a cleaned vent with an open hole invites the next tenant within a season. If there are live animals in there, we stop and tell you, since removal is a wildlife matter and not ours to handle.

My vent run is way too long. Can anything be done about it?

Often, yes. The first thing we check is whether elbows can be reduced or the path shortened, since every bend counts against the effective length. On a big two-story in a newer subdivision, rerouting to a closer exterior wall is sometimes possible if the laundry sits on an outside wall and the crawlspace or attic allows it. When the route genuinely cannot change, an inline booster fan is the answer, wired to kick on with the dryer. We tell you which of those applies after measuring the actual run.

Can you come out today, and how far do you travel?

Same-day slots are usually open, heaviest demand being spring and the first cold week when freeze-thaw swings send everyone back to the dryer. Call in the morning for the best shot at an afternoon window. We cover Charlotte and the surrounding Piedmont, from the close-in mill and streetcar neighborhoods out through the first-ring brick ranches and the newer subdivisions on both sides of the city, between the Catawba River and the Uwharrie foothills. Townhomes, condo mid-rises and single-family homes all get the same visit.
