My washer and dryer sit in the kitchen of an old mill house — where does that vent even go?

In Gastonia's mill-village homes, almost never where you'd expect. Laundry was added to these houses long after they were built, so the duct usually drops through the floor into the crawlspace and runs sideways to a wall or foundation opening, or punches straight out through the back wall behind a porch. We trace it from both ends before touching anything. On a first visit to one of these houses, a good bit of the work is just finding the full path. Sometimes the under-floor run is longer and more crooked than the few feet of pipe you can see behind the dryer.

Why does my lint seem wet or packed instead of fluffy?

That's the Catawba valley climate working on duct that runs under the house. Crawlspace air stays humid most of the summer and damp through our mild, wet winters, so warm moist dryer exhaust hits cool metal and condenses inside the run. Lint that would blow out of a dry duct instead sticks, layers, and packs into a heavy mat. It's the most common thing we pull out of older Gastonia homes, and it's why a vent that was cleaned a few years ago can be badly restricted again.

What usually turns out to be wrong besides the lint itself?

A few things, over and over. Original foil or thin flex duct that's been crushed or has sagged into low spots where moisture collects. Exterior terminations with dampers that no longer swing, painted shut on the 50s-70s brick ranches, or missing entirely on retrofitted mill houses so birds and wasps get in.
